Karnataka Sankey Lake
This Lake is located in the Bangalore district of Karnataka state in India and has the pride to be one of the largest manmade lake in Karnataka state. This lake has a width of more than 800 mtrs. This lake is also called Sankey Tank. The name of this lake is derived from the name of constructor of this lake Colonel Richard Hieram Sankey. Colonel Sankey was the officer of madras Engineers Regiment. This lake is also known as Gnadhadhakotikere, which carries the meaning of Bunch of Sandalwood. A depot of Sandalwood is located near this lake.
History
This water reservoir came into existence in the year 1882. At that period a total of Rupees five lakh seventy five thousand were expended to construct this lake. Initially this lake was having a link with Miller’s tank and another tanks located nearby named Dharmabudhi Tank. During a great drought in the years 1875-77, it was experienced that water collection is very necessary to provide drinking water to the public as well as irrigation purposes.During 1888, overnor of madras took a visit to this station and experienced the bad quality of water coming out from the lake. He instructed well to the authorities of that time to look into the matter as no more death is acceptable due to bad water drinking. Later some reforms were made and the quality of drinking water made better. Now the finest machinery is being used at the water treatment plants located near the lake for filtering the water. In the year 2000, the Sankey lake was also converted into a park with full of amenities. To increae the tourism in Karnataka, it was a step towards. This was done by Bangalore water Supply and Sewage Board. Alongside the lake, paved pathways were constructed. Landscapes lying unattended were converted into parks. Swimming pool was provisioned there.

By Air: Bangaluru International Airport is the nearest airport to reach this lake. The lake is in the city itself, so no problem of local transportation is there.
By Rail : Major trains of the country reaches at Bangaluru every day. Frequent running of trains from other parts of the state is also enable a tourist to visit this lake. All the classes of accommodation in trains are available upto this city.
By Road : National Highway Number 7 is one of the major road available to reach this lake.Bangaluru city is well linked with other cities through road heads. Link roads and other state highways are also available and are in good condition. Local transportation is frequently available. Tourist cabs and city buses are always available.
