Thrissur is known for its spiritual, cultural and religious learning from the history. It comes fourth largest as per the population of districts. The city serves as a hub for many native entrepreneurs and is also a financial and commercial business centre. Thrissur is a huge shopping centre for Gold and Silk trade. Due to this reason, this district attracts many tourists from outside and within Kerala. The city also hosts the famous colourful festival of ThrissurPooram.

Thrissur has one of the main manufacturers of gold and gold jewellery in the whole of South India. More than 70% of the jewellery is made in Thrissur. With around 3000 gold ornaments manufacturing units, it also provides employment to more than 200000 families. The city is also hub to many Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing industries. Retailing is another booming business and earns a lot of revenue for this region. Retailing basically consists of Jewellery and textile business. The city has a high literacy rate of 86.5%.
