Kozhikode (also referred by the natives as Calicut) is one of the prominent cities of Kerala due to its contributions towards development of the state in terms of growing commercial sites and infrastructure. As per research conducted by an economics firm, Kozhikode is ranked second best city to stay. Vasco-da-Gama, the famous explorer discovered sea route through this district in 1498. To commemorate the discovery, a monument has been constructed here.

Kozhikode is situated at an elevation of 1 m and located between 11°Northand 75.77°East. The city is covered in an area of 29 sq km. The city is surrounded with canals, lakes and other water bodies. Special attention is given on maintenance of climate balance, bio-diversity and flood management.

Speaking about trade, Kozhikode city has developed a huge market for its domestic and international trade. There has been spectacular contribution by this region towards trade, commerce and development. Kozhikode has been one of the biggest centres for marketing of commodities like coconut, coffee, pepper etc. This region receives an annual rainfall of 3266 mm of rain that allows abundant vegetation growth.
