Kollam city lies in the Arabian Sea coast and is the fourth largest city of Kerala. Kollam is located on the south-west coast of Kerala. Kollam is rich in forests, hills, lakes, mountains, backwaters and huge green fields. Rivers that flow through this district are Kallada and Ithikara. Due to this, the coastal region has sandy soil and the eastern forest region has forest soil. Rest of the region has huge deposits of laterite soil.

This district sees a variety of climates, ranging from humid climate in summers to seasonal rainfall. This varied seasonal change is ideal for growing cashew, which is a speciality of this district. Kollam is fairly important district for cashew trading and processing and manufacturing industry. It also serves as a hub for Kerala’s marine products and exports majority of the catch to other countries. Coir production is another booming industry of this district. The adjoining Kundara sub-district is an industrial area for manufacturing ceramics, aluminium and starch. It also provides ample employment opportunities to the people in this region. Clay and tile manufacturing industries are another sector that has increased employment in this region by two-fold.

Kollam is also known for its natural gifts of rivers, hills and forests, and also traces of the past trade relations with other states. Modernization and industrialization has astonishingly made this place ideal for trade.
