Uttara Kannada is a northwestern district in Karnataka. The district is bordered by Goa, Belgaum, Dharwad, Haveri Shimoga, Uttara Kannada and Arabian sea. The district was under Bombay Presidency from 1818 till the independence.

The region was originally ruled by Kadambas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara Rayas. After the downfall of Vijayanagara empire in 1565, the place was ruled by Maratha empire from 1700s. This region was lost to the British in the Anglo Maratha war in 1818.

The Sahayadri range or the Western Ghats are the biggest feature of this area. The rivers that flow through the district include Kali, Gungawali, Aghanashini and Sharavati. These rivers flow through the hills and create magnificent water falls like Unchalli Falls, Magod Falls, Shivganga Falls Lalguli Falls and Mailmane Falls.

With a heavy rainfall in the place, the place has evergreen forests. There are parks here such as Anshi National Park, Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, Atteveri Bird Sanctuary, in the district which are home to numerous species of both plants and animals.

The economy of the district is agro-based. The produce of the district includes rice, sugarcane, coconut, arecnut, cocoa, cashew, mango, banana, pineapple, Garcina, Sapota, pepper, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, millet and cotton.

Some of the temples found in Uttara Kannada are very old. The place is also famous for jain Basadis.
