Udupi is a southwestern district in Karnataka. Udupi, as a separate district was formed in August of 1997. Udupi is surrounded by Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga and Chikmaglur districts. The place is famous for its cuisine all over south India.

The Ashta Matha and Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi are the places of the origin of the cuisine. Udupi or Udipi, as commonly known, is the famous type of cuisine which is found in almost all restaurants in major south Indian cities serving vegetarian cuisine.

Udupi comes under the Tulu area or Tulu Nadu which is to the Southwest of Karnataka. The majority of the people speak Tulu language here. Agriculture in Udupi consists mainly of rice, coconut, arec nut or betelnut, cashew, etc are grown in this region.

• Shri Krishna Temple: Udupi Shri Krishna Temple is very famous here. The temple was built by Madhvacharya, was a saint who propagated Vaishnavism.
• Kuthpady area is known for Subramanya Swamy temples, Bramha Vishnu Maheshwara Temple, Atyayuga Yogashrama and Ramakrishna Bhajana Mandira.
• Kollur: Kollur is famous for its Goddess Mookambika temple. The tourists from Kerala and Tamil Naud come here often.
• Malpe: Malpe is fishing town and trading harbor. The place is famous for its beach.
• St. Mary’s Island: It is an island in the Arabian Sea. The place is very near to Malpe.
