Kolar is a sout-east corner district in Karnataka bordering Krishnagiri and Vellore districts of Tamil Nadu and Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Kolar is a newly formed district which was a part of Chikballapur district. Kolar is famous for its gold mines which are known by the name Kolar Gold Fields.

The hunt for gold started many millennia ago at Kolar with connections with Indus Valley Civilization. Some of the gold coins that were found in Harappa and Mohenjo-daro were traced back to Kolar with impurities testing techniques. Mining in this area was done during the Gupta period to Chola period to the Vijayanagar period. Later Tipu Sultan had also ordered for mining in this region. Even during the British period mining in this region continued. Due to increasing costs and diminishing gold deposits the mines at Kolar Gold Fields were shut down in 2003.

The main occupation in this district is agriculture. With not many natural resources for fresh water supply, the district depends more on ground water for both irrigation and consumption. The produces of this district include agriculture, dairy, sericulture and floriculture.
