Bangalore Rural District was established in 1986. Bangalore was split into two districts, Bangalore Urban and Bangalore Rural. It is 16th largest district in Karnataka. With an area of 5800 sq. km, the district is part of the Deccan plateau with an average height of 600 to 900 meters above sea level. The place is surrounded by mountains and hills which form the western ghats. These places are ideally suited for visiting tourists.

The population of the district according to 2011 census is 987,257 were the male and female ratio is 51% and 49% respectively. The literacy rate stands at 78%. Horticulture has a significance presence in Bangalore Rural with crops such as mango, grapes, betel, vine gardens, etc.

Animal husbandry is also prominent with poultry, cattle, sheep, etc. Other small-scale and cottage industries also have their presence here. Weaving, beedie-making, agarbatti making and handicrafts are some of the businesses found here. Rivers such as Arkavati, Kanva and Dakshina Pinakini river tributaries flowing through the district. Ragi and mulberry are the chief crops in Bangalore rural.

The district is famous for places such as Mekedatu, Sawan Durga, Manchina Bele, Kaveri Fishing camp, Devanahalli fort, Shivagange, etc. These places serve as one of the tourists spots. Channapatna toys which are made out of wood can also be found in Bangalore rural.
