Bagalkot district is to the north of Karnataka. This place has its roots from year 550 BC under the Chalukyan king Pulakeshi I. Bagalkot was the place where 12th century social revolutionist “Basavanna” was born. According to Mythology, Bagalkot was gifted by Ravana to his orchestra. This place was ruled by Chalukyas who were later defeated by the Rashtrakutas in 753 BC. Later on the 13th century Bagalkot fell into the hands of Allauddin Khilji. Then from the Khiljis the power shifted to Mohammed Tuglaq. Later on In the battle of 1818, Bagalkot fell into the hands of the British from Balajirao Peshwa.

According to the 2011 census, Bagalkot population is 1890826. The male and female distribution in the population is approximately 51% and 49% respectively. The literacy rate is 69% in the district. The majority of the languages spoken in Bagalkot are Kannada, followed by Marathi and Urdu.

Agriculture is the major occupation in the district. Apart from jowar, rabi, maize, bajra, wheat, sugarcane and tobacco, cotton is also produced here. This district is considered as the 12th major economy in Karnataka which is worth at US$ 5.6 billion. The water supply for this district comes from the Kendur reservoir, Badami and Muchkundi reservoirs. It is also home to weavers in both cotton and silk.
