Salsette Island
Travelers throng to the wonderful Salsette Island, which is situated in India’s west coast in the state of Maharashtra. District Thane lies on this island, thus making it very densely inhabited. Salsette Island is bordered by Vasai Creek in the direction of north, Ulhas River in the direction of northeast, Arabian Sea in the direction of west and south, and Bombay Harbor and Thane Creek in the direction of east. The original 7 islands of Mumbai that were unified by land reformation during 19 and 20th centuries and created the city of Mumbai are now nearly a southward protruding isthmus of the much bigger Salsette Island.
Salsette Island is dominated by hordes of hills bordered by tidal flats. Quite a few smaller islands actually lay on the island’s western side. These included Juhu, Bandra, Rai Murdhe, Dharavi Island, Marve Island, Versova, all with a mound core, sandy beaches and embellishing wave-cut platforms. The highest point in the island is the pointed peak of Kanheri in Borivali National Park. It must be noted that the park is the largest in the world within city limits.
