Kavvayi Island
Kavvayi Island, which is located close to Payyannur in Kannur district, Kerala, is visited by several travelers and holiday seekers all the year round. A bridge on River Kavvayi actually connects this beautiful island to Payyannur. It must be noted that Kavvayi Island has also been mentioned by famous global travelers such as Marco Polo, Abdul Fida and Ibn Batuta. The island is bordered by a group of small islands known as Kadappuram directly facing the Arabian Sea. Entry to these tiny islands is through traditional thonis or small boats. These islands are actually getting smaller in size and mass and the population has been shifting to cities.
The Kavvayi Backwater, which is situated close to Payyannur, is actually third biggest backwaters in the state of Kerala and biggest in north Kerala. Topically known as Kavvayi Kayal or Kavvayi backwaters, this lesser recognized lake of north Kerala is fed by 5 rivers. Kavvayi River and its tributary flows through Kuniyan, Kuppithodu, Vannathichal and Kankol. Kavvayi actually used to be inland port and main administrative hub during the British rule and past centuries. The Kavvayi Lake comprises numerous big and small islands and Valiyaparamba Island is the largest among them, stretching over 16 km2.

Places to Visit in Kavvayi Island
Bekal Fort: It is a coastal fortress lying 17 km south east of Kasargod located on the background of Arabian beach of Pallikkara village in district Kasargod. It is considered to be the finest preserved fortress in Kerala.
Thonikadavu: Thonikadavu in Kasargod district is very famous for its mist clad meadows and virgin forest. It is located a few kms away from the ancient Bekal Fort. You can easily engage in trekking, swimming, canoeing and other types of outdoor activities here.
Ananthapura Lake Temple: Ananthapura Lake Temple, which is located in Kasaragod, was constructed in 19th century. The temple is accessible to public by a bridge only. A crocodile in temple’s pond is believed to be 125 years old and it is a tourist attraction.
