Kamorta Island
The Island of Kamorta which is also a village in the Nicobar Chain of Islands, lies in the tehsil of Nancowry. There are around 520 houses and on an average 89% of the population have literacy.
The entire island of the Kamorta is observed to be a tribal area, by the Andaman and Nicobar Tribal Regulation. Nicobar personnel have their additional family members holding land areas here. Though there are no official papers for holding such lands, there has been no dispute between the locals and the Nicobarians on this issue. With the approval of the queen of the Central Nicobar Rani Lachmi, a portion of land of area, say 33 acres was granted for infrastructural development and thus, the INS Kardip in Kamorta came up which was put up in 1973.
However, post Tsunami there was a dispute between the Nicobarese and the Defence authorities on the holding of 317 acres of land in Kamorta. The Nicobarese from the villages in vicinity used these areas for plantation purposes, which was used by the Government for putting up temporary sheds for the people affected by Tsunami. INS Kardip however brought a halt of the operation claiming that 109 acres was the land of Army allotted at Kamorta which was given to them in 1978-79 for building up a Coast Guard Station.
Different efforts and pursual of matter relating to the land row between the Nicorbarese and the Navy Team through negotiations from Government and other angles have borne no fruit, as there appears to be justifications from both sides and also Rani Lachmi who can only authenticate the justification for release of the land to either of the parties, having been also expired in 1989. Also, building of the naval base would jeopardize the interest of the local heavily and will only aggravate the problems. Taking away these lands would also possibly leave many of the Nicobarese landless personnel and make them go without food.
