Kalpeni Island

Geographically coordinating at the 10.069093°N 73.644962°E, Kalpeni Island is known for various beaches. It is one of the important islands as part of India’s Lakshadweep Union Territory. It is a small island with its total area of 2.79 km2 or 1.08sq mi. Locals of this island speaks the official Malayalam language here. As an inhabited island in Lakshadweep it has emerged into the fastest growing tourism destination in this region.

Located in the western side of Kochi Port at a distance of 218 km Kalpeni Island is easily accessed from other notable destinations. Distance between this island and Androth is 71 km in south while Minicoy is at 201 km. Suheli Par is one of the uninhabited islands located at a distance of 139 km in the eastern side of this island. As Kalpeni Island forms a single coral atoll besides many uninhabited islands including Cheriyam, Tilakkam and Pitti, islet this island remains worth exploring in the region.

The northern tip of Kalpeni Island has a prominent beach namely Tip Beach that is famous for snorkelling, sea bath and kayaking activities. Shallow and calm water of this area near beach due to presence of coral reefs turn this location an excellent place for adventure activities.

An interesting thing to explore in Kalpeni Island is its 37m high lighthouse. One can reach up to that lighthouse for an aerial view of the whole island as well as the lagoon with numerous tiny islands located nearby and the reef that looks one of the attractive places in the surrounding oceans. It is worth enjoying watching too many coconut trees and forests. Moideen Mosque is one of the beautiful places here.
