Havelock Island

Spread into an area of 113.93 km2 Havelock Island has the identity of largest amongst the Andaman Islands. Comprising of the Ritchie's Archipelago which is the island chain in the eastern side of Great Andaman in Andaman Islands, it one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the region. Located at a distance of just 57 km in the northeastern side of the capital city of Port Blair, Havelock is an attraction of sorts.

Having been named after the then British General, Henry Havelock who had been deputed to serve India for some time, this island is currently dominated by diverse population which comprise of Bengali settlers as well as many from the Bangladeshi origin whom Indian government settled after the 1971 war between Indian and Pakistan which caused settling large chunk of masses.

Kala Patthar Beach is one of the famous tourist attractions in Havelock Island today. As it has strong historic impact, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Union territory administration took keen interest to develop it in tourism sector. Today it is known in the region for being one of the fastest eco-tourism places.

Similarly, Beach No. 7 or Radha Nagar Beach on its western coast remains most sought after beach on the Havelock. It has attained the position of ‘Best Beach in Asia’ since last one decade. Other beaches in and around this island include the famous Elephant Beach on northwest coast to Vijaynagar Beach or No. 5 and No. 3 and 1 on eastern coast of this island.

Those interested in snorkeling activities can prefer Elephant Beach at the famous Havelock Island. Indeed it is famous and sought after snorkeling destination in the area after Port Blair based Jolly Bouy Island for such activities.

Havelock Island has many ferry services. Government Ferry operates throughout the year while Makruzz Ferry operates except May to August months. Coastal Cruise can also be chosen for this purpose except May to August months when it doesn’t operate. Likewise, the most recent Express Bhagya and Green Ocean are notable ferries for enjoyable service.
