Prasar Bharati
Prasar Bharati is India’s largest broadcasting corporation under the government. It is a body which functions autonomously and was brought into force through a parliamentary act which consists of the sections of All India Radio and Doordarshan Television Network. These were included as the media under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It was demanded by government sanctioned broadcasters to have autonomy, as was prevalent in many other countries. As a result of this, a parliamentary act was passed for autonomy in 1990, but it was only in 1997, September, that the act was enforced.
Prasar Bharati act
The primary aim of this act was to set up a broadcasting corporation and define the powers, functions and composition. All India Radio received autonomy through this act, as well as Doordarshan, which earlier were in the hands of the government. In 1990, the President of India allowed for the proposal to be signed by him, after the parliament passed the Act. The implementation was actually done in the month of September in 1997. All the legal matters pertaining to the All India Radio and Television were now transferred to the Prasar Bharati.
Prasar Bharati Board
As per the act of the Prasar Bharati, the day to day management, superintendence, and other powers were supposed to be managed by the constituting of a board and these corporate affairs are to be managed by the board.
It comprises of Chairman and various members related to finance, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, personnel, director general of Akashvani and Doordarshan, and two representative employees of the corporation. The president of India appoints the chairman, and other members, apart from the ex-officio members, nominated and elected members.
