National Dairy Development Board
The National Dairy Development Board which has been established as per law of the Indian Parliament is an important institution. It is headquartered at Anand in Gujarat. Other offices of NDDB are situated in other parts of the country. The famous Mother dairy is also a subsidiary of NDDB.
NDDB is the brain child of Late Dr. Verghese Kurien and Dr. Amrita Patel. At present Dr. Patel is the chairman of NDDB.
It was formed in 1965 as per the wishes of the then Indian Prime Minister Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri to expand the success story of Kaira Milk Producers’ Coop. Union which is now called Amul, to the other parts of the country.
Aims and objectives of NDDB
The objective behind the project was to pool the energy and wisdom of the farmers and the professionals to capture the market of milk and its allied products in the country and at the same time safeguard the investment and services of the farmer community. This government initiative tasted first success in the form of ‘Operation Flood’ which was financed by the World Bank. ‘Operation Flood’ remained in operation from 1970 to 1996. The success of this operation made India the largest producer of milk in the world. The main objectives of ‘Operation Flood’ were:
- Increasing the production of milk
- Increasing the income of the farmers
- Providing milk and milk products to the customers at fair prices
At present over 96000 cooperative dairies are associated with NDDB under the three tier structure. The pattern is called Anand Pattern.
A Perspective Plan for the year 2010 has been launched by the NDDB with the following objectives:
- To ensure high quality
- To increase production
- Preparing of data base for development of National Network of information
- Proper institutionalization
The NDDB has achieved great success. It has empowered millions of farmers through cooperative societies and made them rich in terms of tangible and non tangible wealth.
As per the latest census half of the India’s population belongs to females. People’s participation is necessary for the sustainable economic and social growth of the country. In the democratic set up of the country it is important that all sections of the society take part in the development of the country. Though this is difficult but is achievable. Any section of the society should not feel that it is being ignored in the development because it will develop apathy among the ignored masses. Women are no exception and they should play an import role in the development of the country. NDDB aims to achieve this objective of active participation of women in the white revolution of the country. It has involved large number of women in the socio-economic development of the country.
The National Dairy Development Board assists in:
- Institution Building (IB)
- Enhancing Women Involvement in Cooperatives
- Strengthening Procurement Systems (SPS)
