NCAOR or National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research is an institution in India for research and development, being autonomous in its functioning under the Department of Ocean and Development, directly working under the Government of India. NCAOR is located in the city of Vasco in Goa and looks after the Indian Antarctic Program, while keeping the government designated research station in Antarctica, named Maitri. This organisation was set up in 1998 on 25th May, and its found this body is under the purview of Ministry of Earth Sciences under Government of India.
Overview
NCAOR looks after the government’s coordination programs of Arctic, Antarctic and Ocean studies, apart from providing research facilities for students to followed PhD, along with the Mangalore University and University of Goa.
This organisation is housing a laboratory set up with specially designed low temperature facility so that samples of Ice Core can be stored, from Antarctica as well as from Himalayas. A Polar Museum and a National Antarctica Data Centre is being planned to be set up in this place. The Himadri Arctic Research Station is being operated by NCAOR in Spitsbergen city of Norway.Under the jurisdiction of NCAOR is the management of the Oceanic Research Vessel ORV Sagar Kanya, which is the flagship for the various vessels for study of oceanography. There have been a lot of studies possible in Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, because of this ship. Various global standard experiments are also helped with by this organisation, along with plenty of conferences held at international level and leading committees which are related to science and study of Antarctic.

Functions
The NCAOR has been named as a nodal location for implementation and coordination of various Indian Antarctic Programmes, along with the maintenance of the permanent station belonging to India.
The work of NCAOR is multidisciplinary. Research is being carried out in a complex matrix, which is the focal theme of the polar science, a topic which is not being pursued in any other place in India.
Most of the computing and infrastructure facilities have been set up at a great pace, along with having adequate recognition. NCAOR has been identified by Mangalore and Goa universities for carrying out post doctoral research.
The aim of government of India to carry out research in the region of Antarctica has been well preserved by the starting of this organisation. Also, the low temperature laboratory has further strengthened the commitments to pursue research in this field.
Maitri is the Indian station in Antarctica, which has been kept functional since its establishment, and various critical studies have been conducted since that period.
The aim of the organisation is to undertake, help in the process of guiding, promoting and coordinating research on polar science and oceanography.
