Indian Police Service
Indian Police Service which is commonly known as IPS is an All India Service. It is a Indian Government’s Civil Services- one of the three All India Civil Services. It was formed in 1948 one year after the independence by replacing the Royal Police of the pre-independent India under the British rule.
The IPS cadre is not an agency which enforces law; it is a service that selects officers according to the professional merit based on competitive examinations. All police officers after passing the competitive exams are required to undergo professional training after completion of which they are called IPS officers. The IPS officers are posted by the central government in different states for discharging their duties.
Their Responsibilities and Duties Include
- Policing on the border and collecting intelligence
- Railway policing
- Maintaining order and peace in public
- Prevention of crime, its detection and investigation
- VIP security
- Commanding and leading various intelligence agencies such as RAW, IB, CID etc. and other police forces traversing all Indian states and UT’s.
- Also responsible for commanding and leading the Para Military Forces including the SSB, CISF etc.
- To have effective and close interaction and coordination with All India Services, Indian Armed Forces and Indian Revenue Service members.
- Leading and Commanding forces with determination, courage, straightforwardness, commitment besides a strong sagacity of imparting service to citizens of the country.
- To endeavour to instil norms and values among policemen that is under their command that could help in serving masses in a better way.
- To show exemplary integrity and understanding towards the people’s aspirations in a rapidly changing economic and social environment, show human right respect, a liberal viewpoint of justice and law and very high degree of professionalism.
