Council Of Scientific & Industrial Research
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research is the organisation for research on a national footing, through a wide range of labs present in different areas of the country. It was established in 1956, and is an autonomous body and is simply the largest R & D organisation in the country. There are about 39 laboratories functioning under CSIR and more than 80 field centres, active in research activities, with a total staff of about 17,000. Ministry of Science and Technology is involved in the funding of the activities of CSIR.
Activities involved in the CSIR are variety of programs, which go across different disciplines, mainly pertaining to the specific needs which have a social feature and is demanded by the society during the phase of globalisation. The total infrastructure of CSIR is an unrelenting effort of many eminent scientists and researchers, who have given years and years of life, in the 6 decades of the existence of this organisation, which has been built at about 1 billion dollars. It was the foresight of the CSIR and its founding members to promote an R & D centre, but in the recent years has gone further into research projects and international collaborations, mostly because of the interdisciplinary and interlaboratory facilities and experience.
CSIR research and development facilities have worked on various fields such as structural engineering, aerospace engineering, ocean sciences, metallurgy, life sciences, mining, chemicals, food, leather, petrochemicals and environment. It is not without reason that CSIR is being considered as the top institute in the country for research activities. A testimony to this is present in the form of achievements in the last 20 years or so.

Aim and Mission
Under the CSIR, there are plenty of other research laboratories, dealing in different processes and have varying credits. Another important charge of CSIR is to assist financially, with manpower and encourage other institutes to conduct research, award of fellowships, and scientific journals. A huge number of achievements are under the flagships of CSIR, and these are in variety of fields. There are experiments, achievements and results in fields of biology and biotechnology, drugs and research, aerospace and aeronautics, coal and petroleum, construction and infrastructure, food processing, machinery and equipments, and much more. A major area of development of people products and patenting of more than 500 indigenous products have been done by the CSIR, with support from thousands of eligible researchers and advanced research protocols.
