Mandi became a district when Himachal Pradesh was formed on 15th April 1948. The district Mandi was originally in the form of two princely states called Mandi and Suket.

The princes of Mandi and Suket were from a common ancestry of the Chandravanshi line of Rajputs of Sena dynasty of Bengal. In fact, Mandi was a part of Suket which was a single state till 1200AD and thereafter they were separated due to feud between brothers. Mandi was formed as an independent state by AjberSen, the nineteenth descendent of Bahu Sen. However, the princes of both Mandi and Suket states surrendered their kingdoms to British Government in 1846 AD, when the latter acquired the whole of Doab area between Beas and Sudlej.

On1st November 1921, Mandi and Suket which were under the political control of Punjab Government till that time, got transferred to the Government of India.

Mandi bears historical importance as the rulers of Suket state were said to be the descendants of Pandavas of Mahabharata and the village Karanpur in Suket is named after Karan, a Mahabharata hero. A temple at Gomma is referred as the place where Pandavas were supposed to have undergone the burning attempt.
