Kinnaur became an independent district on 1st May, 1960. It was earlier a part of Mahasu district since 1947 and was known as Chini Tehsil. By 1960, the border was reorganised realising the ethnic and cultural considerations of the area into the present Kinnaur district. History says that the place was once known as Kanaurra or Kinnaura.

Kinnaur is a mountainous region, which lies in the northeast corner of Himachal Pradesh. Zanskar, Himalayas and Dhauladhar are the three high mountain ranges of the district. It is one among the smallest district in India by population. Kinnaur Kailash, a sacred mountain of Hindus lies in the district. Due to the high altitude, the climate is always pleasant, with winters from October to may and summer from June to September.

Comparing the population, this district is one among the smallest district. Majority of the people in the region follow Hinduism. The valley is famous for its apples.

Kinnauris have a very strong culture. Most of the people are Hindus other than Buddhist, where as some people believe in both the religion. They are also very much interested in dance and music. According to mythology, the people of kinnaur are known as kinners, which means, halfway between gods and men. The region is well known for its handicrafts, especially the Pashmina Shawl.
