Hamirpur district was formed on 1st September, 1972 from Kangra district, which is closely associated with Katoch dynasty. Raja Hamir Chand ruled the dynasty and the name “Hamirpur” was derived from his name. From the Indian Puranas and Paninis ‘Ashtadhyai”, it is evident that the district was a part of the old Jallandhar-Trigarta empire.

Hamirpur is located in the south western part of Himachal Pradesh, bordered by Kangra, Mandi, Bilaspur and Una. Beas river flows through the northern part and Sutlej river flows through the southern part of Himarpur. Jakh Dhar and Sola Singhi Dhar are the main hill ranges of the district. The climate condition is moderate as it is closer to plains, cold during winter and hot during summer.

Among twelve districts of Himachal Pradesh, Himarpur ranks first in the literacy rate. Majority of the population speak the local Pahari language and most among them speaks Hindi also. Most of the people belong to the Hindu religion.

Hamirpur has its own rich folk literature and the district is famous for its handicrafts. Pashima shawl is one among them which is high in demand throughout the country. Like other states, Hamirpur is also multireligional, multicultural and multilingual. Commonly used languages of the district are Hindi, Pahari, Punjabi etc.
