Bilaspur is also known as Kahlur is a part of Chhattisgarh. According to the legend, the name Bilaspur was originated from the name of a fisherwoman named Bilasa who founded the place. Bilaspur is also known as the cultural capital of the state. Bilaspur is the second larget city in the state and is also known as ‘Nyayadhani’ or legal capital of the state.

Bilaspur district is surrounded by lush green forest in the North and coal mines of Hasdeo Valley in the East. Bilaspur is the first major town on the way to Manali after entering Himachal. It lies on the banks of the rain-fed Arpa river. The climatic temperature ranges from 10 oC in winter to 45+ oC in summer.

Chhattisgarhi and Hindi are the main languages spoken in the district and Bengali, Sindhi, Punjabi, English etc. are spoken by a minority group. In addition to the local people, there are people migrated from Sindh, Punjab, Bihar etc.

Bilaspur is known for its rich cultural heritage. The district has its own dance styles, cuisine and traditional folk songs in which some of the famous are Sohar song, bihav song and pathoni songs. All the major festivals are celebrated in the city along with some local festivals like colourful Rout Dance.
