Jhajjar district in Haryana was carved out of Rohtak district in 1997. There are few theories as to how the name was derived. It is believed to have been founded by one Chajju, and the name was later changed to Jhajjar. Other theories state the name to be derived from a natural fountain named Jharnagar.

Total population of the district is about 10 lakh residents, of which about 70% is rural and 30% urban. Population density is about 484 persons per sq. km. Predominantly inhabited by the Yaduvanshi Ahirs and Jats, the social customs are heavily influenced by the Arya Samaj.

The town of Jhajjar is located about 65 kms. from Delhi. Located in the south-east of Haryana, the town lies on National Highway number 71. The district falls within the classified arid and semi-arid zones. Although, some parts do experience water-logging during the monsoon season.

Jhajjar is famous for its cattle wealth. Milk and milk-based products are an integral part of the culture. Social customs are defined by clan loyalties. Being a part of Haryana, the culture there is a mix of Haryanvi and Punjabi culture. People celebrate Punjabi as well as Haryanvi festivals with equal zest and fervor.
