At the time of construction of this dam, various dams were built in the River Chambal in different places of Rajasthan. Chambal Valley Project (CVP) has undertaken the construction responsibility of dams in the CV region. This dam was not built with the purpose of irrigation facility only. Some other major tasks were also related with the construction of this dam. The natural water flow of River Chambal was found ideal and it was decided to produce hydro electricity from this dam. A plant to generate electricity was established on the left side of the dam.
History
Jawahar Sagar Dam was the dream project of Government of India. To provide irrigation facilities to the surrounding areas, to produce hydro electricity, to regulate the water discharge after using the same for power generation through Kota Barrage, this dam was constructed in 1972. This dam was demanded by the local public since first Indo Pak war as the fertile land around the Kota was being waste due to non availability of irrigation facilities. Services of a US based agency were hired for planning and designing of this dam.
Technical Portion
This dam is located at 26 kilometers distance from Kota city. Rana Pratap Sagar dam is also adjacent and located at 29 kilometers from here. The 21.7ft thick wall has been given as the base of this dam. Though, not much water is stored in this dam. Three units of power generation have been installed here with a capacity of 33MW each. Total energy production capacity of this plant is 99 MW. This dam is leading water supplier during any natural calamity. In recent past, when draught gripped the maximum portion of Rajasthan, Jawahar sagar Dam was used to provide interim relief to the population. Water of this dam after generation of power is routed through Kota Barrage to various canals for irrigation purposes. This dam spread over a vast area and entire catchment region of this dam is more than 27000 SQKM.
Attraction
This dam is not only meant for water storage, production of hydro electricity but apart from these activities, tourism has also developed on the banks of this dam. People who are interested in modern engineering can learn a lot from visiting this dam. Better picnic spots have been erected adjacent to the dam.
