Maharashtra Pawna Dam
Pawna dam is located between geographical coordinates of 18.6794185°N 73.4752505°E in the Maval town of Pune district in Maharashtra state of India. This dam was inaugurated in 1972 and took 8 years in completion. This is earth fill type dam and based on gravity. Impounding source of this dam is Pawna River.
History
Pawna dam was established in 1972 in Pune district. Before construction of this dam, more than 2350.67 acres of land was being irrigated from Pawna River but in unorganized manner. Required water was not received by the farmers any time. Rain water was only the media which was depending upon monsoon conditions. Due to this problem, drought was faced by the area several times. To avoid such situations, a detailed survey was done and the area near Maval was found fit for construction of a dam. Construction work of Pawna dam was started in 1964, but soon stopped due to Indo-Pak war in 1965. For the next one year, no construction activity was done but later the job got pace and after a tough work of six years, the dam completed in 1972. Though in this period another Indo Pak war was fought but no adverse effect put on the construction of this dam.
Technical Portion
This dam is an earth fill type dam which based on the gravity. 13.93’ thick wall protection is provided to this dam. Wall is made of concrete, iron and iron slabs. 12 gates have been created to regulate the water flow. Height of the dam is 42.37 mtrs from ground level and the length is 1329 mtrs. Water storage capacity of this dam is more than 7,300 cu m. Water reservoir of this dam has the storing capacity of 58,000 CUM and spread over in area of 2365sqm. This dam has also the hydro electricity plant for generating power upto 1250 Mega watts. For this purpose 5 units have been installed in the power plant each having capacity of 250 MW. This dam is multipurpose and drinking water supply is also being done from here.
Attraction
This place has been developed as a picnic spot also. Maharashtra Tourism department has also arranged some amenities around this dam to enhance tourism. Approach road is in good condition. Transportation facilities are better in Pune and outskirts. The dam and its water reservoir is also a habitat of various species of fish. In the month of June and July some migratory birds are also seen here.
