Madhya Pradesh Bargi Dam
Bargi Dam is one of the largest dams located in Madhya Pradesh. This dam is constructed over River Narmada. This dam was completed first in the groups of dams built over Narmada River. There are total 30 dams constructed on River Narmada. Narmada River is one of the longest flowing rivers in Madhya Pradesh. Out of its total length, 1312 kilometers, the biggest portion of 1072 kilometers flows through Madhya Pradesh and irrigate more than 2950 SQKM area of the state. Seeing this, it was planned to construct a dam and facilitate the nearby areas for irrigation purposes. CWPC has designed and planned this dam. From this dam two major irrigation projects have been started namely Bargi Diversion Project and RAL Sagar Project.
History
The conception of this dam was done in 1968 but could be start practically in 1974. After long and concerted efforts, this dam was completed in 1990. Irrigation area from this dam was planned to increase upto 4370 SQKM.This dam was the first ever dam in the series of various dams constructed over river Narmada. The natural and geographical way of this river is just according to dams at various places in the entire flowing area through the state. Though, this river flows in rift valley but force of the waves are sufficient to generate the electricity through dams.
Technical Portion
This dam has the height of 69 mtrs from ground level. Height includes the base of foundation stone. The length is provided 5.4 KM. A lake is also created at this dam to store water. This lake is spread in the area of 337.5 sqkm. When danger level of water in this dam reaches upto the mark of 422.76m, the alarm is issued in nearby districts Jabalpur, Mandla and Seoni. Power plant located at this dam is of 90 MW capacities. Though the power generation was proposed to be 105 MW but due to technical and financial constraints, the productivity of the hydro electricity has been restricted upto 90 MW only. In this plant, there are 2 units of capacity of 45 MW each, have been installed. Visiting the power plant is permissible if written permission of the concerned authorities is sought before.
Attraction
In recent past, a resort has been made available at the banks of this dam by tourism department of Madhya Pradesh named as Maikal Resort. This resort has all the basic amenities which required by a visitor. Connectivity to this resort is very good as transportation means are better in Madhya Pradesh.
Water Cruise is also available in this dam for the visitors. Boating facilities, Water Scooters, Paddle Boating are also available at very reasonable charges. This point is speedily grown as picnic spot and people prefer to spend their weekends here. Some migratory birds are also seen in this place owing to flying water spots of the dam. Crane, Piegons, Maina and local sparrows are some of the main birds found here.
