Kerala Malampuzha Dam
Malampuzha dam is the biggest water reservoir in Kerala state of India. This dam is located in Palakkad district in the lap of hills of Western Ghats. This construction is combined construction of Masonry and Earthen Dam whose lengths are 1849 and 220 mtrs respectively. This river is built in bridge shape across the Malampuzha River which is a tributary river to second longest river of the state named Bharathapuzzha. This dam is the source of a large network of canals initiated to various places and responsible to irrigate more than 42000 hectares of land.
History
The construction of this dam was started in 1949. After concerted efforts of 6 years, this dam was completed in 1955. Location of this dam is just 10 kilometers from Palakkad city. Channels of canals are spread over an area of 2462 kilometers. This reservoir also provides fresh and filtered drinking to the population of Palakkad town. Malampuzha is itself a small town area which is located in Western Ghats hills and on the banks of River Malampuzha. This place is surrounded with lush and dense greenery. The dam is one of the largest water reservoirs in Kerala state. Area surrounds this dam is being irrigated by the network of canals attached to the channels of this dam.
Technical Portion
This dam is constructed for the irrigation and water supply to the nearby locations. No power generation plant is established on this dam. Water management of the Malampuzha river, which was being wasted before the construction of this dam, could be managed technically for irrigation purposes. Gates, to release water in correct proportion so as to avoid any unforeseen incident, have been provisioned in this dam. Water storage capacity of the reservoir attached with this dam is 25675.00 CU MI. To bare the huge water load, 21.98ft thick wall has been made in the eastern side of the reservoir as the natural surroundings are on the other sides. Wall of this dam has been made by concrete and iron rods to take much load of water. Mortars and lime also used in the construction of wall of this dam as was used in former constructions.
Attraction
There are some beautiful gardens, parks and cooling rest spots have been created by the tourism department of Kerala state. In this reservoir, boating facilities including water scooting are available on reasonable charges. The beautification of this garden is done by world famous Shree Nek Chand Saini who has attained worldwide fame by creating rock garden in Chandigarh. A large aquarium in fish shape is also made here for entertainment of visitors. Rock garden at this dam is the attractive place where very waste things have been arranged in very artistic manner. This place can be accessed through Air, Rail and road ways in easy and affordable way. Coimbatore is the nearest airport which is located at 55 kilometers from this dam. Palakkad junction is the nearest railway station located at 7 kilometers from here.
