Karnataka Narayanpur Dam
A major landmark in southern Indian state of Karnataka, location of Narayanapur in state’s Yadgir district defines its constructive role with an overall contribution in the irrigation and hydroelectricity generation purposes. As it has direct link with Basava Sagar due to both having the causal relation this dam is often denoted with Basava Sagar Dam as well. Unique features of this dam from an overall 37.6 tmcft or 1.075 km³ storage capacity to live storage of 30.5 tmcft or 0.85 km³ keeps it apart.
History
There is historic importance of Narayanpur Dam whose inception was for the sole purpose to make this region self-reliant in irrigation sector but additional options were also added on the later stages. Soon after this dam was formally inaugurated for public to ease irrigation rest two key aspects came into notice from its role to generate hydroelectricity and supplying drinking water that proved the remarkable achievements in due course of time.
With 30 gates having been made to release water meant for irrigation, this dam is of 29 meters high and its length is more than 10 kilometers. Huge amount was spent to complete it since this project was shown the green light to proceed for its completion. It was a historic attempt to develop such dam which later proved one for the multipurpose and extensive support to the region’s growth prospects.
Completion of Narayanpur Dam in the year 1982 was a big event to celebrate as it was going to resolve the major issue to resolve the irrigation related problems of the region. This dam supplies water to areas of Jewargi in Gulbarga and Shaharpur, Shorapur in Yadgir district besides Sindagi & India regions of Bijapur to supply water to 4.21 lakh hectares. Raichur district’s Lingsugur and Devadurga areas also get irrigation water supplied from this dam only.
Effect of the project
Bad impact came during the year 1992 when two gates of Narayanpur Dam failed partially. Same case occurred in 2005 when one more gate collapsed to cause more damage in this dam. Emergency action though made it possible to control the dam even though lakhs of cusecs of water had released. It caused dropping of Basava Sagar reservoir to many meters due to such bad impacts. This dam has brought greater level of changes in terms of progress through supply of sufficient irrigation water which therefore changed the scenario in agriculture sector here.
Power Generation
Although mainly constructed for irrigation purpose but Narayanpur Dam has also been used to generate hydroelectric power which has brought additional growth.
Tapping dead Storage Potential
It must be noted well that trapping dead and storage potential of Narayanpur Dam is worthwhile and should be understood in different contexts. Its storage potential is high henceforth monstrous irrigation related issues got resolved over the period.
Attractions
Narayanpur Dam and nearby areas have become a major tourist attraction in the region. This dam project has numerous salient features. Some more attractions of this dam which seek attention are as follows:-
- Power & industrial projects here and nearby areas
- Complexes & special projects in and around this dam
As Narayanpur Dam locates in the Gulbarga District which in itself is a major tourist destination in the state, this dam has already emerged into a major holidaying spot. This dam is an earthen one where tourists arrive to participate in various adventure activities.
