Karnataka Krishna Raja Sagara Dam
Krishna Raj Sagara Dam is constructed over Kaveri River in Mandya district of Karnataka state. This dam is multipurpose and beautifully designed. Older style of construction gave a gorgeous look to the dam. This dam is located between the geographical coordinates of 12°24′58″N 76°34′26″E. Construction of this dam was started in 1927 and the dam completed in all respect in 1932. Location of this dam is just 12 kilometers away from main town. This dam is located at a distance of 120 kilometers from Bangalore.
History
Surrounding area of the Mandya district was affected from flood as Kaveri River overflows at various places and the submergence area was increasing regularly. In 1927 the planning of this dam was completed and execution started in the same year. After a tough and conventional constructional style, the dam was completed in 1932. This dam was built by Sir Vishveshwaraiya. This dam was multipurpose as flood control and drinking water supply was assigned task of the dam since construction. Hydro electricity generation was not assigned with this dam. At present the surrounding area is well protected from flood and water force of the river has been managed in well condition.
Technical Portion
Height of this dam is 130 ft and to regulate and control the force of water, 152 sluice gates have been provisioned. Length of the dam is 3.5 kilometers and water storage capacity is 49 billion ft³ (1.4 km³). Catchment area of the dam is 10619 SQKM and the filling period of the reservoir is June to September. Total 26,640 hectares area comes under the submersion hazard of this dam as 25 villages have threats to affect by the flow of this dam. This dam is masonry and has a gravity based design with a large numbers of sluice gates for discharge of water. Height of the dam is maintained at 130.80 excluding foundation and river bed level and the length of the KRS Dam is 8597 ft. A total number of 152 sluice gates are provisioned in this dam at various elevations but it has been ensured that all the gates are in rectangular shape to allow the easy discharge of water. Left portion of the dam has a channel from where a long network of canals has been initiated. Total length of canals is 303 kilometers from left channel. Complete canal system is perennial whether from left channel or right channel of the dam. Both sides canals system is unlined including main canal called as Vishveshwaraiya canal.

Srirangapatana is the nearest railway station to reach this dam by train. From railway station there are frequent road transports are available to reach this dam.
By Road
From Mysore to Bangalore, there are frequent bus services available. Bust station Srirangapatana is the nearest bus stop from where, local auto rickshaws, taxies are available on affordable charges. From Bangalore, this dam is located at 120 kilometers and one can also reach at 2 hrs drive.
Attraction
Around the KRS Dam there are a lot of picnic spots. Brindavan Garden is located at a distance of 12 kilometers from here. This garden has heavenly beauty. The site has been designed in such a way that natural flow of water and artificial touch with nature can mesmerize a visitor. Beautiful fountains, stare case style gardens with a look of garden (with small canal) as in Taj Mahal Agra is one of the beauty of this garden. In this garden, automated gates are constructed since long. In this garden a luxurious resort and a guest house is also located with full amenities and connectivity to the rest parts of the country. Surroundings of the garden are full of natural and scenic beauty. In very close vicinity of this garden, a bird sanctuary is also located. In this bird sanctuary, various species of migratory birds can be seen in summers. The atmosphere of this Arabithittu bird sanctuary is most convenient for migratory birds and a large numbers of bird species are naturally habited here.
