Karnataka Alamatti Dam
Almatti dam is constructed over Krishna River in Bagalkot district of Karnataka state. This dam is multipurpose as the irrigation, water supply and generation of hydroelectricity are the assigned responsibility of this dam. This dam has the capacity of 290MW hydroelectricity generation per year. Construction of the dam was started in 1997 and completion done in 2005.
History
Almatti dam is one of the most important dam projects in Karnataka state of India. Bagalkot and Bijapur districts of the state are sharing the water of Krishna River for irrigation purposes. KPCL (Karnataka Power Corporation Limited) carried out a detailed survey and after the planning done; Almatti village was earmarked for construction of dam. Work started in 2001 and it took forty months in completion and the dam completed in 2005. At the starting, the cost of construction was estimated as Rs. 1470 crores but later it increased as the work involved some more aspects and abnormal delays. Though, Krishna River flows through a number of cities and all are irrigated from the water but water management for irrigation and generation of Hydroelectricity was not done in proper manner. Almatti dam answered all the questions and drinking water is also made possible through this dam. Presently, Bijapur, and Bagalkot districts are getting fresh drinking water for their urban population.
Technical Portion
Height of this dam is 52.26 mtrs and the length is 1565.15 mtrs. Upper Krishna Water Project is just located adjacent to Almatti Dam and this is the main water reservoir for the project. This dam is assigned to produce 290MW hydro electricity per year. Five units of 55 MW capacities have been installed in the power plant of this dam. Geographically the dam is located in Bijapur district but submergence of a huge area of Bagalkot district also claims to be established there. Water storage capacity of the dam is 42.19tmc. Initially the height of the dam was got stuck in a court case and a joint tribunal of Karnataka and Maharashtra gave the verdict to raise the height of the dam till 52.4 mtrs. This dam is located between the geographical coordinates 16.331°N 75.888°E. Catchment area of the dam is spread in 33,375 SQKM and surface area is spread in 24,230 hectares.
Attraction
Almatti dam is a pretty place to see. Water flow of the dam is not less than a natural water fall scene. Nearby Upper Krishna Water Project is also a beautiful place with full of civil engineering. Construction, design and building of the dam are very attractive and invite a visitor to come here time and again.
In nearby are of this dam, a seven terrace garden has also been developed by the forest department of Karnataka. In this park, various entertainment facilities have been provided including water scooting, boating, swings for children, fountains etc. In this park there is also a “Rock Hill” where all the creations have been done with the help of Ceramic. A lot of animals and bird species have been created to show the forest life to the visitors.
This dam can be visited through a rail journey. Bijapur is also the nearest railway station and away on just 66 kilometers from here. Frequent road transportations area available at time. KSRTC also runs its bus services to this dam as this is one of the most popular tourist places in Bijapur.
