Jammu & Kashmir Dumkhar Hydroelectric Dam
Dumkhar dam is one of the important hydroelectric projects of Jammu and Kashmir State of India. This dam is constructed over river Indus in Leh district. This dam is 138 kilometers away from the main Leh city and located on Leh – Batalik road. Construction of this dam was started in 1997 and completion done in all respect in 2003.
History
This hydro electric project was constructed over Indus River. This river is well known for its flow, force of water and slopes at various places in flow way. Water management of the area was not in organized manner. Hydro electricity requirement of the area was increasing but the internally installed units are not producing sufficient energy. Also the power generated in these plants was being transferred to some other stare to full fill their requirements. It was decided that after construction of this Hydroelectricity project, electricity will be sold to other state at the rate of 5.30 per unit and free distribution will be made for home state.
Technical Portion
Height of this dam was decided 42mtrs with a length on top area is 220 mtrs. MDDL of the dam is 2853mtrs and a diversion tunnel is also provisioned at this dam with a 10mtrs dia horse shoe. 2 tunnels of such dimensions have been provisioned there and the length of both the tunnels is 450 mtrs. Water reservoir of the dam is having capacity of 2856mtr. Storage capacity of the reservoir is 26.4 Mcum. 4 Spillway gates have been provisioned to regulate and control the discharge of water. These gates are of 8.2 m x 12m size. Each spillway is 56mtr long. Power generation capacity of each unit of this dam is 15MW and three units are installed here. Vertical Shaft Kaplan type turbines are fitted in each unit. Dimension of Machine Hall is 50m x 19.5m and Service Bay is 23m x 19.5m. Maximum gross head of power plant is 32m.
Attraction
Area around the Dumkhar dam is very attractive and viewable. Thus dam is located at Leh Batalik Road which is full of attractive scenes. Travelling only on this road is an adventurers experience. The reservoir of this dam is not permitted to perform any type of water sports. Neither boating nor waster scooting facility is provided there due to safety and security reason. General public is not permitted as this dam is in the way of Batalik road and the area is dominated by defense forces to safeguard the area from any terrorist and infiltration activity.
Namika Pass
This pass is located near the Dumkhar dam and is located at an altitude of 3,700 mtrs from MSL (Mean Sea Level). This way is also known as the Pillar to Sky in local public.
Fotu La
Thius is another mountain pass located on Srinagar – Leh highway. This way is in the Zaskar range of great Himalaya.
Lamayuru Monastery
This monastery is a collection of Buddhists tombs and located in Kargil district nearby to this area.
By Air
Accessing this area is generally quite expensive as nearest airport is Srinagar from there Road transport are available.
By Road
Transports are available from every part of Jammu and Kashmir.
By Rail
Nearest railway station to reach this area is Jammu. Udhampur is also emerged as rail head but major connectivity is rest upto Jammu Railway station only from where road services are available at regular intervals.
