Himachal Pradesh & Punjab Chamera Dam
Chamera Dam is one of the important dams of Himachal Pradesh state of India. This dam is constructed over River Ravi in Chamba district. This multipurpose dam is constructed with the aim of providing fresh drinking water to the nearby population as well as production of hydro electricity. A large water reservoir made on side of this dam is called Chamera Lake.
History
This dam was conseptualised in 1982. After a detailed survey of the region and turning points of River Ravi, the place was selected to construct a dam. The area surrounds the dam was not agriculture oriented but the water management was not good and drinking water supply and electricity need of the area needed another plant. Seeing all the conditions, CWC handed over the construction job to NPEEC. Construction started in July 1983 and after successful foundation, the further course of action continued. Finally the dam completed in Dec 2001. Power plants were established on this dam along with a water filtration plant was.
Technical Portion
Height of the dam is restricted upto 140mtr and length is 295 mtr as the geographical condition of the area does not permit much more large water reservoir. This dam has the power plant of 540 MW. There are 3 units (each with the capacity of 180 MW) but production of electricity has been restricted upto 160MW for long lasting of the plant. The power generation plant of this dam is very large and has a capacity to produce 540 MW hydro electricity. Three power plants have been installed at this dam. IInd Chamera power plant is producing 300 MW power. Ist Chamera plant is producing 240 MW energy. Another plant of this dam is expected to function from next year. 3 units (with the capacity of 77 MW each) have been installed in this plant. This dam is located on the Dalhousie road in Chamba district. This dam is accessible with easy road transportation. General temperature of the area rises in the summer upto 350 C . The water level of this dam shuttles between 747 to 763 meters. The dam has a catchment area spread over an area of 472.5 SQKM and the storage capacit32°35′50″N 75°59′09″E.y of this dam is 110 TMC. Attraction
This dam has been a point of attraction since its inception as the natural surroundings of the dam are very scenic and beautiful. This place has been provided with latest entertainment amenities of Boating, water scooting alongwith a small resort located near the dam. Connectivity to this dam is better as various small link roads are well connected. Road conditions are better because of Dalhousie is itself a tourist place. Communication facilities are also better in this place.
