Gujarat Ukai Dam
Ukai dam is constructed over Tapti River and located at 94 kilometers distance in Surat district of Gujarat. This dam was intended with dual services, Irrigation of the surrounding area in well manner as well as generation of hydro electricity. Flood control was another reason to construct this dam. Surrounding area of the river Tapti in Surat district had faced severe flood attacks in past. Population of the area was in try to migrate to some other place. To avoid this migration of business oriented population and also to save the area from water disaster, it was decided to construct a dam over here. After a demographic survey, the area earmarked for dam and reservoir. Construction started in 1966 and completion done in 1971.
History
Ukai Dam is known as Vallabh Sagar. This dam was constructed to overcome the flood situations in Surat districts almost every year. Large area of the district faced a big loss in flood owing to absence of a trough protection against the overflowing of river Tapti. Geographical area also found fit for construction of dam and generation of hydroelectricity. After a thorough study of the area, a committee was setup under the chairman ship of Chief Minister of the state and planning done. Not to make any further delay, the construction was started and done in 1971 in all respects. Presently this dam is well protecting the river flow and saving the area from flood.
Technical portion
Ukai dam is constructed with a height of 80.772 mtrs and length of the dam is restricted upto 4972 mtrs as the steep flow of water of River Tapti is well covered by this length. Water storage capacity of this dam is 7414.29mm3 and the area of reservoir is spread into the area of 612 km3. This dam is masonry and has the plant for generation of hydro electricity. This dam is a little less that Bhakhra Nangal dam located in Punjab. This dam is directly affecting 224 villages of Surat districts with regards of irrigation. Capacity to generate hydro electricity is fixed at 300 MW. Estimated cost of construction of this dam is Rs. 13,896.15 Lakhs. Catchment area of the dam is spread over 62,255 SQKM and 52000 hectare land is being benefited by this dam due to irrigation.
Attractions
Ukai dam is itself a best tourist place in Surat district. This dam attracts a lot of tourists every year. Approach road to this dam is very good and provide smooth transportation from each side of the district.
The convenient most time to visit this dam is October to March. Weather of this area is generally bearable as 310 C highest and 220 C minimum which is easily tolerable.
Navsari
Navsari is also an attractive area near this dam. This is a port area and provides better loading support to the Surat city through water ways.
This place can be accessed through all the means of transportation available. By Air reaching is also possible as Surat airport is the nearest one and located at 100 kilometers from this dam.
By Rail
Surat railway station is also located near the dam. All the major trains are connected through this railway station.
By Road
By road conveyance is also available from railways station and other nearby places from Surat. State Transport Corporation and private tour operators provide their services at affordable charges.
