Introduction:

Daman is a very small place and always referred to along with another place by name Diu. Daman is the smallest Union territory of India on the sea side with Gujarat as its border. It has a representation in the Lok Sabha of the Indian parliament.

It is a beautiful place with beaches, river beds, green fields, forts, temples, churches, etc. Daman has developed industrially too and has attracted many people to come and settle in this small and calm place.

History Behind Capital Name:

Daman is a mythological character and it means demon in German. When read backwards it gives the word Nomad which means psychic or person with no permanent dwelling place.

Daman was ruled by many rulers and has adopted many cultures as the time went by and has evolved a culture of its own.

There is a river by name Daman ganga. This name might have had an influence in naming the place.

Population:

Daman is a very small union territory with a population of 35743. Among these male population was 53% and the female population was 47%.The literacy rate is 81% among males and 70% among females. 12% of the population consist of children below 6 years of age.

People come from different parts of India and most of them are skilled and educated people. The local people are mostly fisher folk who are locally called as Tandels. The population consist of Hindus, Christians and Muslims. Mejority of them are Hindus.

Geographical Information:

Daman is on the western coast of India. It is situated on the southern borders of the state of Gujarat. Diu is on the northern side.

Daman is about 193 kilometers away from Mumbai. To its east is the state of Gujarat, west is the Arabian Sea, north is the Kolak River and south is the Kalai River.

Daman has 5mts. (16feet) Of elevation.

Weather Conditions:

Throughout the year the weather in Daman is moderate.

But in summer the temperature ranges from 26degrees Celsius to 36degrees Celsius, with May being the hottest month of the year. In general March to May is summer months.

The temperature in winter varies from 17degrees Celsius to 33degrees Celsius. November to February is considered as winter in Daman.

During Monsoons, Daman gets very heavy rains and the season is from June to September. The ideal time to make a trip to Daman from October to May, but till February it is best for sightseeing. During monsoons seasons the place is idle and without any activity.

History:

History of the Capital:

Daman was a Portuguese colony along with Goa for over 450 years. Before that from 8th century to 1510 it was ruled by various rulers like Chowda Rajputs, Waghalas and Muslims. Then it was controlled by the Portuguese till 1961 when India occupied and made it an Indian territory. In 1987 when Goa was made a full fledged State, Daman and Diu were retained as as a separate Union Territory.

Demographics:

Daman is a very small place and most of the population is skilled and educated and migrated workers from various parts of the country. The total population of Daman is about 35743 out which 53% are males and 47% are females. The literacy rate of Daman is very high. The literacy rate of Daman is 76% where as the national literacy rate is 64.84%. Daman’s male literacy rate is 81% and female literacy rate is 70%. But Daman has 12% of its population with children below 6years of age. Most of the local population belongs to fishermen who locally are called as Tandels. The most popular language is Gujarathi since its neighboring state is Gujarath.

Economic Information:

The main revenue centers in Daman are industry and agriculture. The total area under cultivation in Daman is around 3375.65 hectares and the crop grown is paddy, ragi, bajra, jowar, pulses, wheat, banana, mango, sapota, coconut, sugarcane, groundnut etc. In Daman the approximate area under irrigation is around 393.93hectares and under un-irrigation is around 3304.73 hectares. The forests are not present in Daman.

There are around 2930 industrial units, both small scale and medium scale units in Daman. The areas where major industries are present are Somnath, Dabhel, Bhimpore and Kadaiya.

In Daman all the villages have electricity and the power supply is from the western region’s power station.

Culture:

Culture, Cuisine, Festivals and Religion:

Daman’s population consists of Hindus, Christians and Muslims. The most popular language spoken is Gujarathi. The customs and traditions followed during birth, marriage and other ceremonies in Daman are very much similar to those followed in the neighboring state Gujarat.

The people of daman are generally called as Damanite and are very much affiliated with dance and music. Urban and the folk cultures are a mixer in the lives of the people of Daman. Since the Portuguese ruled the land for over 400 years, their culture has a great effect on the Daman culture.

All Hindu festivals such as Holi, Dushera, Diwali etc are celebrated. Christmas, New year, Id are also celebrated in Daman with great enthusiasm.

In Dabhel’s Mahadev temple the annual Gangaji fair is celebrated with enthusiasm by taking a dip in the nearby tank and worshiping the deity.

A dish made of boiled, sweet and salty peas popularly known as papri by the locals in Daman is a delicacy. Different cuisines like Chinese, Parsee are also available in Daman. Drinks like beer, scotch whisky and tody are very popular among the people of Daman.

In general the people of Daman are friendly, fun loving and cosmopolitan people. Since most of the population are migrated from different place the culture too is mixed and varied. None will feel out of place in Daman.
