Medak Cathedral lying at Medak, a town in Andhra Pradesh has been called as cathedral church of the bishopric belonging to Medak for the Church of South India since the year 1947. It was constructed by the Christians of Methodist and it was consecrated on December 25th 1924. It is the biggest church lying in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
History
Medak Cathedral was constructed under the supervision of the Methodist Christian, Charles Walker Posnett, who was later led by the sole motto “My best endeavor for the sake of my Lord.” Charles Posnett came to Secunderabad in the year of 1895 and after befriending British soldiers at Trimullghery, entered the villages and later reached Medak hamlet in the year of 1896. During those days, there was no railway line leading to Medak. The journey of 97 km from Hyderabad had to be covered on back of the horse. But, Posnett was able to do it in a single day. In the entire area of Medak, there were scarcely 200 Christians, who used tiny tiled house for their worshipping place. As soon as the number of Christians increased, Posnett constructed a structure in the Mission Compound just in the shape of church but considered it unfit and in the year of 1914 founded the current cathedral church, which covered 1000 acres of land in the area of Ghusnabad. During 1919 to 1921, when the natives of Medak were facing drought, Posnett offered them help by giving them employment in the work of the construction related to church rather than providing a free kitchen. The work of construction continued for at least 10 years. It was Posnett, who sanctified the church in the year of 1924 by thanking God for lessening the pains and suffering of the victims. When many folks of Christians became united, the Medak Cathedral acquired the status of cathedral church of the bishopric of Medak in October 1947.
Architecture
As far as the dimension of this Medak Cathedral is concerned, this church is 100 feet in width and 200 feet in length and bears much resemblance to the style of Gothic architecture. It can house at least 5000 people at a time. Its mosaic tiles were brought from Britain and these tiles are of six distinct colours. Italian masons hailing from Bombay were employed for putting the decorative flooring. Huge pillars constructed with fine hewn and properly dressed stone give support to the gallery and the entire edifice. Its roof is made sound proof by sponge material and has an amazing style of vaulting. The surface of the vaulting is in the shape of squares. As far as the dimension of bell tower is concerned, it is 175 feet high. It is presumed that when Nizam belonging to Hyderabad knew that this church would be greater than the Charminar in height, he tried an abortive attempt to get its height lessened.
Stained Glass
Among all the fascinating objects of the Medak Cathedral are its stained windows made up of glass, thereby depicting the events of Christ’s life. The windows were constructed by Sir O. Salisbury. These windows were installed at various periods.
