Mahasamund district is spread out in an area of 3902.39 Sq. km in the Central-East of Chhattisgarh State. The western boundary of the district runs along Mahanadi River and is hilly.

History:

Mahasamund has been inhabited by tribes from long back. There are many types of tribes which live here. They are Kanwar, Kamar, Halba, Dhanwar, Munda, Kharai, Bahalia, Pardhi, Saharia, Saur, Sanwara, Sonar, Bhujia, Binjhwar and Kharwar.

Demographics:

The district is located between 20°47’ to 21°31’30" latitude and 82°00' and 83°15'45" longitude and shares its border with Raipur district and Nuapara District and Bargarh District of Orissa.

Granite rocks are found in the Basna, Bagbahra and Pithora region. In addition, shale, limestone layers, quartzite sandstone are also found. Dolerite, Neo-granite and quartz are also found in this district.

Mahasamund district is surrounded by districts of Raigarh and Raipur of Chhattisgarh State and Nawapara and Bargarh of Orissa. Mahasamund District covers an area of 3902.39 sq. km

Culture:

Mahasamund celebrates many festivals and fairs throughout the year. The celebrations extends from the month of Chaitra to Phalgoon. In their custom, friends and relatives are invited for feasts. Due to the abundant availability of Limestone and Granite rocks, the city also raises a great scope for mining.
