Koriya district is situated in the north-western part of the Chhattisgarh state in Central India. After the formation of the new state of Chhattisgarh on 1st November 2000, Koriya District became part of the new state.

History:

Under British Empire in India, Koriya was a princely state. Post Indian Independence in 1947, the rulers of Koriya and Chang Bhakar were added to the Union of India on 1st January, 1948. This district came into existence on 25th May, 1998, when it was carved out of Surguja District. After the formation of the new state of Chhattisgarh on 1st November, 2000, Koriya District became part of the new state.

Demographics:

As per the 2001 census, the total population of the district was 586327 out of which 51.38% were male and 48.62% were female, 44.4% belonged to the scheduled tribes. Literacy rate of this district was 63.1%, the male literacy rate being 75.7% and female literacy being 49.7%.

Geographically:

Koriya District lies between 22°56′ and 23°48′ North and 81°56′ and 82°47′ East. It shares its borders withSiddhi District ofMadhya Pradesh on the North, on the south by Bilaspur District, on the east by Surguja District, and on the west by Shahdol District. The total area of the district is 5977 sq. km, of which 59.9% is forest area.

Culture:

Community dances like the Karma, Saila and Suga Dance are celebrated mainly in the district during different festivals. Koriya celebrates the main festivals of India such as Diwali, Dasshehra and Holi.
