The Union Territory (UT) of Chandigarh differentiates itself in India as state capital of two of its states Punjab and Haryana. The modern city is a brainchild of the visionary first prime minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru so it truly becomes a city established in the free India.

Often denoted with "the Fort of Chandi" which its name suggests, Chandigarh city describes the aesthetic urban sense of the country through its beautification planned structuring. It is first planned city of India after independence so remains unique. Architectural designs of this city is quoted in the Indian and international urban planning initiatives.

History:

Hallucinating situation arrived for independent India in 1947 when its division proved a great loss for its historically important province of Punjab which lost its capital Lahore to Pakistan. A city of such caliber was required to replace as new capital of this state but none of the existing cities could compete there. None were found feasible to be chosen state capital. It was at that juncture that importance of well planned city was realized and the idea of establishing Chandigarh city was formed in new India.

Fast paced growth and shaping urban India to symbolize strength of a country had to depict from Chandigarh so it was planned with excellent outlook. The city could portray modern face of India. Role of French architect and urban planner, Le Corbusier is important whose creative initiatives in the 1950s resulted into designing this modern city.

Chandigarh once again came into the notice for an enhanced importance to serve as capital of one more state Haryana which was carved from Punjab on November 01, 1966. This new state was an attempt from India's state reorganization process. Eastern part of Punjab was carved out to form Haryana state. Central government made Chandigarh Union Territory to smoothen the way for both the states of Punjab and Haryana to operate their administrative and political activities by choosing this city as their respective capitals.

Architecture and urban planning of Chandigarh keep this city into limelight, so are cultural diversity. This city has unique landscaped gardens and is also noticed for structured parks. The art galleries and Chandigarh Museum are some unforgettable places of this city.

Chandigarh city is located on Shivalik range foothills of the Himalayas. Its average elevation of 321 meters and humid subtropical climate seethes residents with a pleasant weather. The city also has hot summers and mild winters with needed rainfall. Above mentioned reasons often keep the temperature varied from-1°C to 41.2°C.

The 2001 census recorded Chandigarh population 900,635 (56% males and 44% females). This city had average literacy of 81.9% (males 86.1% and females 76.5%). Religious diversity is seen here through the presence of 78.6% Hindus out of total population and Sikhs comprising of 16.1%. There is sizeable number of Muslim population in Chandigarh at 3.9% of the total population. The census recorded 1.4% population belonging to other communities.
