Kapurthala Cantonment
Kapurthala Cantonment is one of the 63 Cantonments of India established in the state of Punjab, where Kendriya Vidyalaya functions very satisfactorily for the benefit for the people around this area.
At one time Jaisalmer kingdom which was ruling Kapurthala were in possession of the area on both sides of the Sutlej, and also in the Bari Doab, in the later period lost them during First Sikh War, sometime afterwards Raja Randhir Singh restoring it during the mutiny of 1857, with the help of British rulers, whose successor was Raja Sir Jagatjit Singh.
Kapurthala imperial service infantry group played an important role during the 1897-98 Tirah expedition and the railway line from Jalandhar to Amritsar passes through Kapurthala territory.
Kapurthala city has a number of monumental buildings and locations of interest connected with its local history, which are principally the present Sainik School , which was earlier Jagatjit Palace, District Courts buildings, Shalimar Bagh Gardens , Moorish Mosque, Panch Mandir meaning five temples, State Gurudwara, Clock Tower, Kanjli Wetlands, Jagjit Club, Guru Nanak Sports Stadium and the NJSA Government college.
History
Kapurthala town where Kapurthala Cantonment is established was founded by Jaisalmer scion Rana Kapoor in the 11th Century, although the present Royal family in Kapurthala are the descendants of NawabJassa Singh Ahluwalia, who was a brave and intelligent leader of the family of Sikh rulers.
Kapurthala was ruled by the Ahluwalia dynasty for quite some period, which rulership is mostly referred as the Walia dynasty, having its jurisdiction around of 652 square miles of urban area having a population of about 314,341 in 1901, collecting estimated gross revenue of Rs 178,000 every year.
How to Reach Kapurthala Cantonment
Kapurthala city has good transport and communication channels linking various cities of Punjab and Northern part of the country, located 19 km away from Jalandhar which is its closest neighbouring city.
Jalandhar railway junction is the nearest rail link for Kapurthala, while the nearest international Airport is Amritsar, which is approximately 66 Kilometres away.
Kapurthala city is serviced by Cabs provided by a company called WOW Cabs, which provides travellers transport for Airport and Rail Station Transfers, and also for long distance travel.
Demographics
As per 2001 Census of India, Kapurthala population was 84,361, whereas the data from the provisional figures of 2011 census indicates a population of 101,854, Males constituting 55% then and now, and females 45%, however the Kapurthala’saverage literacy rate of 65% in 2001 has now improved to 82%.
