Lakshman Jhula
Lakshman Jhula is an attractive and strongly made iron suspension bridge located in the hilly state of Uttarakhand. It is precisely situated on the banks of Ganges River in Rishikesh district of Uttarakhand. The bridge is actually considered an impressive architectural marvel in the state of Uttarakhand. Pilgrims from all over the country and even abroad come to the holy city of Rishikesh in order to seek blessings from their gods and goddesses. It must be noted that there is an identical bridge close to Lakshman Jhula by the name of Ram Jhula. According to some legends, Lord Lakshman crossed the river Ganges with the help of jute ropes at this place where the bridge is constructed. Therefore, pilgrims tend to pay reverence to Lakshman Jhula as well.
The bridge was constructed in the year 1939 and pilgrims get a chance to sight many picturesque views from this bridge. Sunrise and sunset views are simply great to watch and visitors get overwhelmed. Pilgrims and local people use the bridge in order to reach the sacred shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath that are located approximately three kilometers from Rishikesh. There are two brightly painted temples situated on the opposite side of the Ganges River. According to some reports, Lakshman Jhula is said to have been built by the Britishers.
Geography
Lakshman Jhula, the renowned hanging bridge constructed on the banks of Ganges River is actually 3 kms from the township of Rishikesh district in Uttarakhand state. The iron suspension bridge is 450 feet in length and is built at an elevation of 70 ft from the Ganges River. Lakshman Jhula is considered an adjoining bridge built on river Ganges for the people and pilgrims to reach the sacred shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath. The bridge is considered as a major tourist attraction in Rishikesh not because of its religious sanctity and ancient derivation but due to the presence of ancient temples, shrines and vibrant local market. An impressive 13 storey temple named as Terah Manzil located very close to Lakshman Jhula is famous among the visitors and pilgrims. The top floor of Terah Manzil provides impressive natural views to the pilgrims and visitors, especially during the sunrise and sunset.
Another attractive tourist place located to Lakshman Jhula is Lakshman Temple that has a Rishi Kund. As per some historical records, Lord Lakshman and Lord Rama actually took bath in Rishi Kund after the massacre of Ravana. The whole area around the bridge gives a mystic, blessed and serene atmosphere. Moreover, as you see pilgrims and visitors lost in the spiritual traditions, the whole area gets inundated in captivating Shlokas and mantras being recited from the shrines and temples. The local marketplace around the Lakshman Jhula is actually famous for idols of gods and goddesses, wooden souvenirs, Rudraksha, holy books, local jewelries, gems, artifacts, clothes and scrumptious street food. The entire area around Lakshman Jhula is so blessed that devotees and visitors from all over the country and abroad make it a point to come and explore the place during festivals and holy Yatras.
