Jubilee Bridge
The Jubilee Bridge in West Bengal is a rail bridge that has been constructed on Hooghly River and connects Naihati with Bandel. On either ends of the bridge are located the railway stations Garifa and Hooghly Ghat.
History
The bridge was first used in the year 1887 on 16th February on the occasion of jubilee year of Queen Victoria’s sway. The work for the construction of the bridge began in 1882 and it was completed in 1887. The person responsible for the civil work related was Lt Col Arthur John Barry who was the nephew of Project Engineer responsible for construction of London Tower Bridge, Sir John Wolfe-Barry. The people who designed the bridge were Sir Bradford Leslie who was also the Chief Engineer of India and the other person was Alexander Meadows Rendel. The steel used in the construction of the bridge was taken from two companies one is the Hawks Crawshay of Gateshead company in England and the second is the company based in Scotland named James Goodwin of Mother well.
Description of the Bridge
The unique feature of Jubilee Bridge is that it is a cantilever truss bridge that has been constructed using the riveting that is no nuts and bolts were used for the construction of the bridge.
During the current times, the construction of Rail Bridge parallel to this existing Jubilee Bridge with the name Sampreeti Bridge is in progress after which the use of Jubilee Bridge will be stopped. The new bridge is being constructed by Tantia Construction limited.
