East Godavari is a district located at the northeast of Andhra Pradesh. Its headquarters is located at Kakinada. In 1925, the old Godavari district got divided into east Godavari and west Godavari district. The district is stretched over an area of ten thousand eight hundred and seven square kilometers.

The district is one of the highest growing cities in the country. The rate of literacy of this district is fairly high. Telegu is the official language of this district.

The west of the district has a hilly terrain and is comparatively plain on the east. On the eastern side lies the Bay of Bengal. Temperature in this region during summer rise to around forty five degree centigrade and in winter it comes down to twenty three degree centigrade. Monsoon starts here from June and continues till October. The average annual rainfall in the northern parts is about hundred centimeters while in the extreme west it receives around one hundred forty centimeters.

East Godavari, with its coconut groves and the lush paddy fields is called the rice bowl of the state. The district, the Rice Granary of Andhra Pradesh, beckons tourists, with a love for nature, to visit this rich cultural heritage. Kakinada, its headquarters, located on the coasts, is a growing into an educational hub. The district is the second richest district in the country and is still developing industrially.
