Tambaram Air Force Station
Completely military type airport which is being owned and operated by country’s Air Forces, Tambaram AFS is located at the Tambaram city in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Named after this place at which this airbase bases, it locates on the elevation of 90 ft., from the sea level. Geographical coordination of the region at which this airbase locates is at 12°54′25″N 80°07′16″E which makes this place best suiting enough to operate and manage an airport. The Indian Air Forces do operate it for training and other security operations to continue from this major airbase that has seen gradual development over the period.
History
Based to the Tambaram semi-urban locality in the suburbs of the capital city of the Tamil Nadu state’s metropolitan city of Chennai, Tambaram AFS has important roles to play today for the management and control of Air Forces from southern region and command of the Air Forces. Government of India had deliberately established this airbase on this region to strengthen the Air Forces through southern command from the Tambaram AFS besides other nearby airbases operating from the state and adjoining states.
Tambaram AFS caters to the Air Force training needs in this regions and equally does it monitor the security arrangements as well as any7 possible threat to the areas from the closest cities of Tambaram, Kattuppakkam, Iyyapanthangal and Chennai amongst others and the country from southern part in general.
Establishment of Tambaram AFS was a strategic plan chalked out by the Indian Government to ensure that Air Forces could be strengthened in all respects in this particular region. The airbases nearby it were already established and a few were in the verge of establishment while Tambaram AFS had been established here. Such plans were strategic and in line with the planned strategy developed by Air Forces to coordinate with the neighboring stations for both training and operations in the warlike situations and to counter similar such threats or natural disasters et al.
Erstwhile Madras / Minambakkam or Chennai airport, Numgambakkam, Arkonam, Tiruthani, Mahabalipuram, Tirupati, Vellore and Pondicherry Airports amongst others are other civilian cum Air Force airports which have remained well connected with Tambaram AFS since its operation began. These airports collectively cater to the security needs of this region from the southern borders in particular and whole country in general in case of any mishap, natural disaster or crisis which country may face and require the overall support of armed forces particularly the Air Forces.
Runways
Having been developed from asphalt, the runway of Tambaram AFS was an attempt to bring air operations in order. It has been modernized for several occasions since then through applying best possible measures to bring a proper system and cater to the growing needs of air trainings. Its length and surface are as per the required needs that also ensure that all types of Air Force trainings and jet operations from take-off to landing could be made possible from its runway.
Units at Tambaram AFS
Tambaram AFS is equipped with several training Units which do ascertain that the Air Forces might initiate various types of training sessions as well as ready forces for attack as and when such needs occur. The Units here coordinate with nearby airbases to further strengthen the operation of Tambaram AFS and to keep the country’s security measures right in order.
