Nal Bikaner Air Force Station
Also denoted with Bikaner Air Force Base, Nal-Bikaner AFS or Nal Airport came into limelight the sooner it was established to train Indian Air Forces in Rajasthan state of India. This military type airport is operated by the Indian Air Force in the Bikaner city to be used for the training purposes. The elevation of this airport from the sea level at 750ft., or 229m makes it an important to note. This airport geographically coordinates at 28°04′14″N 73°12′25″E.
Location of Nal-Bikaner AFS or Nal Airport at a distance of 13 kilometers from the main Bikaner city in its western side makes it an exceptionally unique location. This Air Force Station has become an important place in and around the region as a big landmark today. More interesting is its role to train security forces from the state of Rajasthan to strengthen the armed forces to maintain the internal security of India.
This airport has already welcomed drastic improvement ever since modernization of this airport began. Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already started construction of a civil enclave at this airport to make it operational for general masses as well by its commercial operation in the region sooner or later.
History
The history of Nal-Bikaner AFS is unique in terms of its inception to operation in the Rajasthan state. It started with mere airfield whose growth continued with constant developments as an Air Force airbase to full-fledged airport getting modernized in a period of mere few decades. Earlier government-owned 20-seater aircrafts would take off from this airbase but such services were closed by 1987 when plan began for complete revamp to ensure a new and modern airport would be developed for the Air Forces with an aim to use it for commercial purpose as well.
Concept of Modern Nal-Bikaner AFS or Bikaner Airport saw light of the day with it getting approval from the authorities to start construction work in the year 2009. It began with the construction of a new terminal from that year to complete within few years. Unfortunately a dispute occurred between Airports Authorities of India and Defence Ministry on the issue for terminal building height that caused the delay in commercialization of this airport to make it operational for the common masses to enjoy air services here besides the Air Forces. As it was planned, Nal-Bikaner AFS is almost ready to serve the general masses with its separate civil enclave with the terminal which can easily handle at least 100 passengers in one go. Its 60X90 meter apron is now capable to hold at least two ATR-72 aircrafts soon after airport was modernized to improve the services.
Runways
Nal-Bikaner AFS is well established with its modern infrastructure which includes its completely developed runway. Although there is no scheduled commercial air service available on this airport but its runway has been developed further to cater to any such needs in the near future.
Units at Nal-Bikaner AFS Base
Out of the many unique features of Nal-Bikaner AFS the one that keeps it apart include the Units at this airbase. It being a training airport has unique arrangement that ease Air Force trainings to cater to the security needs of the region. The airport is developed further to make it ready for the commercial operation but at the same juncture it is very much into limelight for being a major base for the security forces operating from this area.
