Sayaji Baug Zoo

The Sayaji Baug Zoo, Vadodara, Gujarat is very popular place of the city. Located on the river Vishwamitri, this zoo covers an area of 113 acres and that is why it is one of the largest zoos of the western region. The zoo has a lot of greenery with round 98 species of flora. The zoo is built within the Sayaji Baug garden and has three entrances. The first entrance is from the Sayaji Square, the second one is from the Fatehganj or also known as Ranapratap square and the third is between the first and the second. The second entrance lies straight on the Vadodara railway station.

History

The Sayaji Baug garden was built in the year 1879 by Sayaji Rao Gaekward. This is the reason that the garden was named after him and was a dedication to the people of Vadodara.

Important Points to Know

  • The park is open on all the days except Thursday.
  • The timings are as follows 

5:00 AM - 8:00 PM (Garden Timings)
10:00 AM - 10:00 PM (Train Timings)
10:00 AM - 6:00 PM (Zoo Timings)

  • The entry fee is different for zoo, garden and museum

 7 per adult for planetarium 
 5 per child for planetarium 
 40 per adult for toy train 
 20 per child for toy train 
 10 per adult for zoo 
 5 per child for zoo

  • You can collect the zoo map from the entrance and move accordingly
  • You are not allowed to capture the pictures of the animals
  • Do not tease the animals
  • Keep the premises clean and tidy. Use the dustbins
  • Do not destroy the plants and trees
  • Refreshment is available inside the garden
  • Keep your luggage safe and secure by using the locker facility
  • Keep the kids along with you and in case they get lost or you can contact at the entrance
  • If you require any other assistance, you can consult the professionals at the various outlets
  • There is proper arrangements for drinking water and toilets

Best Time to Visit

October to March is the perfect time when you can visit the zoo. Do not forget to explore the museum, foundations and the floral clock which are highly unique and worth seeing.

Wildlife

The Sayaji Baug garden is known for its several attractions.

  1. The first is the museum which was designed in the year 1894 and is somewhat similar to the Albert & Victoria museum London. The architecture was developed by Major Mant and R.F. Chisholm and has some of the finest collections including the paintings, sculptures and many more. There is a small picture gallery as well to visit.
  2. The second is the floral clock which has a diameter of 20 feet and very appealing
  3. Then you have the toy train which covers a distance of 3.5 kilometers and takes you to all the corners of the important location. The ride is just of 20 minutes.
  4. The zoo and the aquarium are the next in the list. If you are fond of fishes, you will surely love to explore a variety of fishes that will take your heart away. There are 1103 species of animals which are classified into 167 types. There are around 45 various fish species that you will be able to see

 How to Reach

The Sayaji Baug zoo us accessible by rail, road and air. It is entirely your choice as which mode is convenient for you. By road, Vadodara is connected to NH 8 and therefore you can easily come here. There are lots of deluxe buses that ply from different cities. Through rail, the Vadodara railway station is nearest and well connected to all the major places. The city also has an airport thereby offering you airline facilities from Delhi, Mumbai etc.
