Indore Zoo, Madhya Pradesh

Spread around in an area of more than 4,000 square metres, the park is a major attraction of the city. It is known for white tigers and other exotic animals that are present here. The park witnesses a huge footfall everyday as there are no other major zoos in close proximity. The government has appointed a staff to take care of the zoo and have taken every measure possible to keep it clean and tidy.

History

It is the oldest zoological park of the city and is named after the wife of India’s first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Built with an aim to attract more tourists to the city, the park has become one of the main attractions of the state and has been aggressively promoted by the state government.

The zoo has been recently converted into a place of breeding for rare animals and also for artificial reproduction. Apart from the tigers, white peacock and Himalayan bears also attract the visitors. At first, it was strictly an animal only park but today, it is also being used to conserve some species of plants and trees. Many trees have been conserved under expert supervision and officials keep visiting the place regularly to ensure that it is being well maintained by the staff.

Things to Care of When Visiting

  • Most of the animals in the zoo are exotic, thereby; any attempt to harm or steal them is strictly prohibited by law.

  • Do not try to feed any of the animals present here as zoo officials are very serious about the rules of the place and may take a strict action if you try to break them. Feeding animals can disturb their diet and may end up getting them ill because not everything suits wild animals.

  • Keep the place neat and clean and try not to bring any plastic packets into the zoo. There have been instances elsewhere in the country where animals have choked onto plastic packets while trying to eat the contents inside them.

  • You will be allowed to carry food inside the zoo but any kind of alcoholic beverage is prohibited. Please avert from getting any such beverage inside zoo premises including inflammable items and cigarettes otherwise you may invite legal trouble for yourself.

  • Toilets are available within zoo premises and it is advisable that you use them instead of urinating in the open. Officials are never pleased by this act and you will be immediately ousted out of the park if found doing so.

  • In case you are attacked by any animal or get hurt by some other way, you should immediately contact zoo authorities who will call a doctor.

  • In case of any dizziness or if you feel that your body has been dehydrated, please use the benches which have been placed at many spots inside the zoo.

How to Reach

  • Since the zoo is not located on the outskirts of the main city but within it, there are many ways to reach it.

  • You can use buses, tuk-tuk, rickshaws and taxis to reach the location.

  • The location is not a heavy traffic zone thereby it will not take much time to reach it.

  • There are many hotels and restaurants available around the zoo.
