Chinkara Breeding Centre Kairu, Haryana

Nestled in a remote village, the Chinkara Breeding Centre Kairu has been the shining example of the wild life conservation in Haryana.  It has become a prominent tourist hub because of the 60 acre area in which it houses diverse flora and fauna. The exact location of the park is between 28° 40’N latitude and 75° 56’E longitude. Whole area of the park is fenced to provide protection to the wild animals.

History

As far as the history is concerned, the park was started at Bhiwani near Bahal in Bhiwani district in the year 1995. To start with, 10 chinkaras from the other reserves were released into the 60 acre forest. Different animals that were rescued from various places in the state have also been released into the park. Park has been set up with the aim of protecting wild life and also inculcates awareness among the people about the environment. It has helped to foster healthy relationship between humans and animals.

Visitor Information

  • The park is established to ensure that animals are displayed to the visitors in their natural habitat. They provide valuable wild life education to the people.

  • Sick wild animals, orphaned and injured species are sheltered in the park where they thrive in natural surroundings.

  • Prompt veterinary help is provided to the wild animals living in captivity. Special efforts are taken by the authorities to maintain the gene pool of the Chinkara species which are on the endangered list of animals.

  • As far as maintenance is concerned, the Chinkara Breeding Centre Kairu lies under the supervision of Inspector and the sub inspector Wild life. Animals are situated in the 24 acres area of the forest fenced to provide highest level of protection.

  • Animals live on natural feed but in case of lean period, they are fed twice to enhance the nutrition level. Various groups are fed on an individual basis so that weak and old ones are protected.

  • Educational signage about chinkaras is present in the forest so that visitors can have first hand information about the present species and their habitat.

  • There is one small enclosure along with a bigger one for the endangered deer.

  • Quality of the food is checked on a regular basis to ensure that there is no contamination. The feed is given according to the rules laid down by the wild life act. Feed is supplemented with vitamins as per the recommendations of the veterinary surgeon.

  • The animal excreta and the solid waste in the forest are disposed in an environmentally safe manner. Rubbish is removed on a regular basis from the park to prevent the onset of infection to the people.

  • Numerous facilities such as water supply are available to the animals located at the breeding center at Bhiwani near Bahal in Bhiwani district.  Moreover, the fresh water is also accessible to the visitors arriving in the park.

  • Impeccable sanitary facilities are available and more are in the pipeline for the wild life enthusiasts.

  • The enclosures housing animals are cleaned on a regular basis and the debris are burnt to prevent diseases to animals.

  • Upon arrival at the center, tourists are welcomed by a giant entry gate which is well connected to the roads leading inside. The forest reserve is equipped with a well trained staff that provides valuable information to the visitors about the species and their behavior.

  • Numerous researchers visit the place to learn about the various facets of the breeding programs of Chinkaras. They also learn the different aspects of ecology in the forest.

Best Time to Visit

According to the experts, the best time to visit the place is in the winter month as animals can be spotted in the pleasant weather. Generally November to February months witness a huge influx of tourist to the park.

Wildlife

The current census shows that there are a total of 66 chinkaras in the fenced reserve. Out of them 22 are males and 42 females. Apart from them, there are 2 young ones which are being raised by the wild life authorities.

How to Reach

The Chinkara Breeding Centre Kairu is located about 1 km from the Kairu village and 35 km from the Bhiwani bus station. Breeding center is connected with prominent cities such as Jaipur, Delhi and Chandigarh. People arriving at the Delhi airport should drive 150 km to reach the place.
