Jammu & Kashmir Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary
The famous wildlife sanctuary, Nandini was founded in 1990 for preserving the dense forest, which cover the adjoining locations of Jammu city including its wide wild life. This wildlife sanctuary is situated only 28 kilometers distance from city of Jammu. This wildlife sanctuary of Nandini got its name from nearby village of Nandini. This Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary is a home to various species of birds as well as animals. This sanctuary is also renowned for its huge population of amazing pheasants. In the olden days, the area of Jammu was highly surrounded by dense forests along with rich wild life. So for the preserving this amazing forest, a wildlife sanctuary was set up by the authorities, which is known as Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary got its name after the Nandini village. It was really a great decision to covert the area into a wildlife sanctuary as it assists to maintain the ecological situation and balance of the climate. This sanctuary was set up in 1990. Visitors from all over the country as well as world come to this sanctuary to discover its natural beauty and rich wildlife.
Weather and Best Time to Visit
Jammu city is a cool as well as pleasant area because of its subtropical climate. The season of summer is normally dry as well as hot. However, the winter season is always very cold. The temperature of summer season can reach more than 45 degree and in the time of winter, the temperature can go below zero degrees Celsius.
The best time for great lovers of birds to discover this wildlife sanctuary of Nandini is from the month of March to the month of May. The visitors, who like to discover its amazing wildlife, can visit to the sanctuary from the month of September to the month of March.
How to Get There
The Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary is only 28 km distance from the close by airport, which is situated in the city of Jammu.
The nearby railhead is also only 28 km distance from the sanctuary and situated in the city of Jammu.
Government as well as private buses run to Nandini from the city of Jammu (only 28 km). Other route is from Srinagar, which is 274 km far from this Sanctuary.
The wildlife Sanctuary of Nandini is home to various species of animals including Goral, Barking deer, Leopard, Black Partridge, Wild Boar, Blue Pigeon, Grey Partridge, Green Pigeon, Peafowl, Turtle Dove, Jungle fowl, etc. the sanctuary has also wide range of birds including Chakor , Blue Pigeon, Chir Pheasants, Peafowl, Red wild Fowl and Indian Mynah. This amazing sanctuary has also a great variety of rare plants, which cannot be seen anywhere else. The diverse climate, stunning surroundings and sylvan atmosphere make this sanctuary a great place for wide range of wild birds and animals. There is no question that this sanctuary preserves various endangered animals’ species as well as birds’ species, which cannot be seen elsewhere.
The sanctuary is home to large variety of animals such as common leopard, porcupine, wild boar, Bharal, rhesus monkey, goral, barking deer, Indian fox, civet cats, Langur, mongoose, squirrel and hare.
The sanctuary is just like heaven for the bird lovers as there are great inhabitants of amazing pheasants found. Some of them are including Bee-eaters, blue pigeon, Babblers, great wild fowl, Indian mynah, chakor and many more. The Indian fowl as well as Kalij pheasant are the great attraction for the bird’s lovers.
In the sanctuary, there are eight species of mammal found. Some of the important species are including wild boar, leopard, Rhesus Monkey, Grey Langur and Garal. The birds, which can be seen here, are blue Pigeon, Indian Mynah, Peafowl, Chir Pheasants, red wild fowl and Chokor.
Where to stay
It is situated only one km distance from Yatra Registration building and bus stand. This Bhawani Paradise is located in the centre of katra area. It is only 50 km distance from railway head of Jammu and only 52 km far from the nearest airdrome in Jammu. This hotel is only 2.5 km distance from area of Banganga.
- While in the sanctuary, visitors need to dress in some camouflage colors such as green and Khaki.
- Never make noise, do not throw paper, foods and tins on the forest floors.
- During the photo shoot always, make sure that animals and birds should not be disturbed.
