Himachal Pradesh Shilli
Shilli wildlife sanctuary is most attractive area in Solan district in Himachal Pradesh. This sanctuary was established during the year 1963 with the aim to preserve endangered species of that period, ‘The Himalayan Black Bear” but it was felt that the area of this sanctuary must be increased in order to provide a free environment to the endangered quadruped, a re-notification was again released in 1974. This sanctuary was extended upto the area of 2.14 SQKM. Location of this sanctuary is just 5 kilometers away from Solan district.
Wildlife: Shilli wildlife sanctuary is specially established for preservation of Himalayan Black Bear. Except Black Bear, other wild species like Leopards, Musk Deer, Barking Deer, Jackals, Brown Bear and Hyena are also habited in this sanctuary. All the quadrupeds found here are not too violent to attack on population residing in nearby areas. Reason for this animal behavior that this sanctuary is never disturbed in search of woods, land and unnecessary exploitation of natural resources. Natural habitat of animals are not disturbed and hence the attacks on human being have not been noticed in past.
Bird species including Peacock, Parrots (stripped in neck), Hornbill, Pheasant, Woodcutter, Mynas and ducks are also habited in this wildlife sanctuary. The routine food chain of the sanctuary is depending on the ecologically balanced food distributing system by nature itself. It is considered that this is one of the calmest sanctuaries of India. Some poisonous reptiles like Great Indian Cobra, Karrait, Python and Monitor Lizard also find here. Flying Lizard and Karrait are most important reptiles of this sanctuary.
Flora and Fauna: This sanctuary is well fenced and crowded with sky high Deodar and Fir trees. In lower portion of the sanctuary, these trees are generally not seen as conical trees are grown at a certain elevation. Various medicinal plants are also found and a research center is located in Shimla who is doing the commendable job in this area since long.
Fauna: Faunal property of this sanctuary is not very identical but at present a mixed culture of all the species is developing which is fully based on ecological balance. Deer, Bear (Both Himalayan Black and Brown) and Hyenas are major faunal property.
Attractions: For visitors, many more attractions are available in and around Solan district. In the main attractive places, Yung Drung Monastery, Mohan Shakti Peeth, Mohan Mekin Liquor Factory, Kuthar Fort come. Mohan Shakti Peeth is located at 5 kilometers distance from Solan on the way to Shimla at national Highway No – 22. The temples which are built and planned to be constructed at this Shakti Peeth, will be of the design of AksharDham temple of Delhi.
Accept these, Kali Mandir, Durga Mandir, Shiv Mandir, Baba Balak Nath Ji Temple, all are located in the vicinity of 8 kilometers from Solan in surroundings.

How to Reach
Solan is easily accessible by all means of transportation.
Chandigarh and Shimla are the nearest airport located at 63.3 and 28.5 km respectively. From Chandigarh airport, frequent road transports are available at time.
Solan is the nearest railway station. Solan is easily accessible from Kalka. Toy train takes a visitor directly to this station. From Station, road transports are available.
By road is the best mean to reach this sanctuary. Solan located in the mid of National Highways No. 22 (Kalka – Shimla). Bus terminus is Solan and from this stop, taxies are available to reach Shilli wildlife sanctuary. This sanctuary can also be accessed from the side of Shimla. State transport runs A/C, Non A/C, Luxury, Sleeper buses for the tourist on affordable charges. Rather that state transport, private taxies and tourist cabs are also available from Shimla, Kalka and Chandigarh too.
